The team recently had the opportunity to renovate a large, 1,100-square-foot basement in an established 65-year-old home. The basement was close to original design and layout, but the clients wanted it to be more functional, and maison d’etre design-build inc. happily stepped in.

The Clients

Dave and Dee are a retired couple with their adult daughter living at home with them., They approached maison d’etre design-build inc. with the goal of updating the entire basement with a specific focus on the laundry room, creating a new bedroom, a new bathroom, and a reconfigured family room.

Their budget was limited, so the team sat down with the clients and determined the priorities. Affordability and durability were the overarching goals, and it was important that the project stays within their budget. maison d’etre design-build inc. transformed each room into sophisticated, modern spaces that suit the family’s needs.

Dave and Dee had this to say about their project:

“From the initial meeting, thru design, demolition, and final finish, maison d’etre design-build inc. delivered beyond expectations. All sub-trades were managed, and the full-time on-site project management was excellent – thanks, Nick. They were a pleasure to have in our home. The Project

This basement reno was a lot of fun to undertake – transforming the ’60s retro style into the current decade. Since the team was working with a strict budget, all material selections focused on durability and affordability. The goal was to use materials that will last with minimal maintenance and update the spaces with fresh and modern designs.

How did maison d’etre design-build inc. accomplish it? Dave and Dee’s personalized design focused on the following areas:

1. Flooring

Dave and Dee mentioned issues with a squeaky floor on the upper level, so the team addressed it by adding glue and screws to the subfloor and joists while the ceiling was removed in the basement. This additional work scope improved living on the main level of the home while renovations in the basement were underway.

The basement had outdated shag carpeting, which the team replaced with new carpets for the bedrooms and tile and vinyl flooring elsewhere.

2. Bedroom / Rec Room

To make better use of the space, the team converted the existing bedroom to an exercise and storage room accessible to all in the home from the front entry hall. The oversized rec room was then divided creating a new bedroom benefiting from the large window overlooking the beautifully landscaped rear yard.  The new family room with the high-efficiency gas fireplace and floor-to-ceiling stone surround complemented by built-in floating wood shelves and the TV created the now sought after updated rec room.

3. Bathroom

The team expanded the existing cramped and dark shower by extending into the laundry room. The new shower with a frameless glass door, lighting, bright white tiles; heated tile flooring throughout the entire room makes for a much nicer showering experience. Additional upgrades include a new fan, vanity with solid surface countertop and under mount sink, and new toilet.

4. Laundry Room

This former utilitarian room now boasts finished ceilings; new lighting and flooring; a new laundry sink and countertop and built-in shelving – creating a bright welcoming room.
