vision & challenges
- renovated main floor 5 years ago – challenge was matching new reno design with previous; all family members involved in design and details finalized by e-mail while overseas for three months
design solutions
- replaced cherrywood wall in stairwell with glass railings
- relocated master bedroom door; reconfiguring closet access provided space for new office in hallway
- matched floor-to-ceiling ledger stone on office wall to main-floor fireplace; both visible from stair landing; office shelves with integrated lighting/solid surface countertop/hidden wiring chase for cables/surface access panel/plugs with USB ports/enclosed storage
- removed main bathroom tub, door access from bedroom and relocated toilet/vanity; mounted mirror on sliding rail for window access
- used 4-light opaque glass on bathroom doors for continuity with main floor
- created “Zen” master suite – ensuite with walk-in shower; multi-function rain-shower/heads; strip drains; oversized single sink; storage beside shower
- matched custom closet details, wood flooring/stairs/handrails/stair lights to main floor finishes
- upgraded soundproofing in all bedrooms – teens can play music without disturbing others
