Westcoast Modern: Creating Beautiful Accessibility
February 11, 2023
When renovating your home, there are decisions and plans to be made at every turn. You need to choose a knowledgeable and experienced design team for the projects you have in mind.
maison d’etre is a Vancouver-based renovation company offering complete renovation services. They have a fully stocked design center featuring samples from various sources worldwide. Working with the maison d’etre team allows clients to view samples and options in their Vancouver office rather than visiting multiple locations and spending hours traveling between vendors.
Personalized design proposals are the basis for the design process with maison d’etre. Design expertise and skill help ease a client’s mind regarding their choice of renovation company and the provision of a two-year warranty on residential renovations provides peace of mind.
Recently, the team at maison d’etre completed a project on a 20-year-old home that presented numerous renovation challenges. One of the challenges was creating a second primary bedroom with a modern, accessible ensuite.
A Stylish Contemporary Bathroom
Often accessibility is something we don’t consider until the need is present, but the Westcoast Modern project tackles the issue of future mobility. One of the NKBA award-winning projects within the Westcoast Modern project was a fully accessible ensuite bathroom attached to a secondary principal bedroom.
Some of the bathroom features are obviously for accessibility, but they are incorporated into a beautiful, contemporary space. In the curbless shower, there are integrated grab bars, and a thermostatic valve control at the entrance to the shower for ease of access and functionality. The vanity is accessible for those who require a wheelchair or a walker. The toilet is wall-mounted and features full bidet functions.
The medicine cabinet features integrated lighting and internal storage features to keep the counter clear. Lighting controls are integrated into the automated lighting system improving accessibility and functionality. A mix of open and closed storage provides access and privacy for personal items.
The entire room is clad in large format porcelain tile slabs. The book-matched tiles run floor to ceiling, creating a visually stunning effect. Floor tiles are hexagonal and complement the room.
Closing Thoughts
The Westcoast Modern project needed to address bathroom accessibility. maison d’etre did that as part of a second principal bedroom with an ensuite. Sleek surfaces and beautiful tiles make the space not only accessible but beautiful. This bathroom within the larger Westcoast Modern renovation project, won the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) awards for Best Bathroom – Western Canada.
