NKBA Winner 2022 – Accessibility with Style – Medium Contemporary Bathroom

• 20 yr. old architectural house needed updates; lacked storage and food prep workspace
• main house over 200’ from street; had to cross fish-bearing creek; constructed major cribbing to support bridge for machinery; required working with environmentalists, inspection of sediment control

• created new pantry by adding addition on to house mimicking existing house design with sloped ceiling and angled walls
• room has four primary functions – laundry area; food prep area and food storage with fridge/freezer/cabinetry; AV control centre; portable sauna tucked in corner
• separate exterior entrance for direct access by staff/caterers
• created 2nd principal bedroom with fully accessible ensuite which will address future mobility issues
• features include wall mount toilet with full bidet functions; curbless shower and integrated grab bars; thermostatic valve control at shower entrance addresses future wheelchair use; USB power outlets located in niche beside toilet and in recessed medicine cabinet; vanity accessible with walker or wheelchair
• bathroom floor to ceiling large format porcelain tile slabs book matched to create striking feature; hexagonal floor tiles complement feature walls
• retained original kitchen layout but created two islands: one for bar and coffee centre; the other for main working surface with dual cooktops – induction and gas – and eating bar
• equipped upper cabinets/bar with electric motors – open and close with a tap 
• stainless steel backsplash and roller doors for continuity and to complement appliances
• cabinetry with solid wood interiors; pull-out trays under sinks; recycling centre opens/closes with toe sensor; storage space expanded by 20%
• main island with three pop-up electrical stations for phone charge pads/USB ports
