Project Description
vision and challenges
- retiree purchased into 60 yr. old building; wanted to create an open-concept kitchen, open view to ocean
- kitchen needed a major update; had to design around plumbing stack
design solutions
- removed wall to living room to achieve open-concept, made use of fabulous views of cityscapes/ocean
- removed wall separating dining room allowing cabinetry to extend full-length of wall
- installed induction cooktop, Energy Star fridge, filtered water faucet at sink, cabinetry with soft close drawers/doors, pull-out storage
- created space for four stools: 3 on one side, 1 on end of large island countertop
- minimalist profile pull-out hood fan neatly slides inward blending with cabinet; pulls out for maximum functionality
- large single-bowl sink is practical since dishwashers not allowed due to plumbing constraints
- solid surface countertop with grey lines ties in with stainless steel finishes augmented by white backsplash tile/cabinets
- surface lighting for kitchen due to concrete ceiling
- new roller shades serve dual purpose, filter/block sunlight
- retained existing parquet floor but removed tile; levelled floor so no transitions required between floor surfaces; excellent for aging-in-place
- installed vinyl flooring for comfort, soft underfoot
