How to Create a Luxurious Home Theatre for Any Space

January 16, 2023

Over the past couple of years, people have taken a renewed interest in creating home spaces that they can relax in and enjoy—even ones that they can share with a few select friends and family members. If you have an extra room in your home and you’ve toyed around with turning it into a home theatre system, your head is probably full of potential ideas, what-ifs, and possible scenarios.

But going from scratch to a sweet home theatre isn’t as easy as ordering a few things on Amazon and setting them up. There are plenty of considerations that you need to weigh to make sure that your home theatre is going to be comfortable, luxurious, functional, and memorable.

Choosing the Right Space

Maybe you’re lucky enough to have more than one room that could serve as your new home theatre. Is it an extra bedroom, an additional living room, or possibly a basement or attic?

Your room is going to give off plenty of sound, and soundproofing the walls is an additional cost. So, choose the room that has the best acoustics while being away from the rest of the living areas, so that you don’t disturb anyone else while you’re enjoying your shows or movies.

You also want the most available space, especially if you want to add plenty of reclining chairs to share with guests. Plus, the bigger the wall, the bigger your screen can be!

Paint and Carpet

You want everyone to have the best possible experience from the first minute to the last, so choosing the right elements from the walls to the floor is crucial.

Choosing darker-hued elements, like brown, black, or maroon, can reduce light reflection, which will mean a clearer view of your films. Usually, matte paints work the best.

You have to think from the walls to the floor, too! Thick carpets or area rugs will help reduce excess noise from people moving about to get more snacks and drinks or to go in and out to the bathroom. If you leave the floor bare, it will cause echoes. Plus, carpets or rugs are comfier if you’re going to enjoy your theatre barefoot!

Lighting and Curtains

Once those lights go down, you want everyone fully focused on the screen. So, make sure you have blackout curtains or thick floor-length blinds that keep out all the outside light.

Of course, soft lighting around the edges will help give people some amount of visibility when the movies are playing if they need to move around, as well as ambient light while they’re getting settled and exiting the theatre. You can use sconces or recessed lighting to create an inviting atmosphere.

Sound System

No home theatre is complete without a booming sound system! Surround sound is the best, and here is a place where you’re going to want to choose a quality name that will last, such as Dolby.

Adding acoustic paneling can also help upgrade a room that doesn’t have great acoustics to begin with.

Screen

Of course, the pièce de résistance is the screen! If you’ve got the wall space, consider a laser projector that can span an entire wall with only a small piece of equipment. These can be mounted on the back walls or placed in front of the viewing wall on a small table. If you don’t have a fully blank wall, you can use a projector screen as well.

HD Smart TVs are also a great option, and every year seems to come with bigger and better models. When making your choice, consider the fact that screen size, resolution, and HDMI cables will all need to work together for the best experience.

Putting It All Together

Start from the beginning and check off each part of your home theatre system as you decide what will work for you. Then, put all the elements together on paper and make a final decision. Your home theatre will be unique, so make the choices that you’ll enjoy in the long run!
