Westcoast Modern: Breathing New Life into the Kitchen

January 30, 2023

Renovating the kitchen is one way to add tremendous value to your home. Outdated kitchens can leave people wishing for a different solution for dinner other than cooking themselves. Kitchens that need updating have not only aesthetic issues but also structural issues sometimes.

When renovating a kitchen, you can run into unexpected issues with plumbing or electrical components. If you are changing the kitchen’s footprint, you must, at the very least, move electrical or plumbing features, even if they don’t need upgrading. That’s a part of the reason that kitchen renovations can be one of the most expensive undertakings in the renovation world.

If you’ve decided to renovate your kitchen, you want to work with a professional renovation business with knowledge and experience in kitchen renovation projects. maison d’etre design-build inc. offers its clients a full-service renovation program with a cozy design center where you can view multiple samples in one location. Clients can also meet with suppliers in the Vancouver offices of maison d’etre design-build inc.

Recently, maison d’etre design-build inc. completed a multi-faceted renovation project that included a kitchen renovation. The Westcoast Modern project presented several challenges for the team to overcome. Let’s look at the issues the team faced when renovating the 20-year-old house and how they overcame the problems.

Westcoast Modern: A Challenge from the Beginning

The Westcoast Modern project was a 20-year-old architectural house that needed modernization. The home lacked storage space, and the outdated rooms needed added functionality. The maison d’etre design-build inc. team faced challenges before the renovations could begin.

Before the team could begin the renovation, they met the obstacle of getting their equipment, tools, and supplies to the house. The main house was across a fish-bearing creek 200′ from the street. With the assistance of environmentalists, the bridge crossing the stream was supported with cribbing the team built, and then the equipment could cross the bridge to the home.

Modernizing an Outdated Kitchen

When designing the kitchen for the Westcoast Modern project, the maison d’etre design-build inc. team had to retain the kitchen’s original footprint. While the footprint was retained the layout took on a new direction, two kitchen islands were created, adding functionality to the space. One island was designed as a bar and coffee centre; the other was a work and cooking surface. The cooking surface hosts dual cooktops—one induction and one gas—and an eating bar is attached to this island.

The upper cabinets and the bar were equipped with electric motors. The motors allow the cabinets to open and close with a simple tap. The cabinetry features solid wood interiors and pull-out trays underneath the sinks. A recycling centre opens and closes with a toe sensor for hands-free usability.

The storage space in the kitchen was expanded by at least 20%. The main island houses three pop-up electrical stations for phone charge pads and USB ports. The stainless-steel backsplash and roller doors complement the modern appliances and provide a sense of continuity throughout the space.

The large main island provides a large continuous countertop for prepping food or laying a buffet-style meal. The kitchen is only one of the beautiful spaces renovated with this project to provide modern functionality to a once-outdated space.
